Jinyun Mountain looms over everything. Its evergreen ridge, protected as a national nature reserve, shelters the Jinyun Temple, a Buddhist monastery whose foundation reaches back to the fifth century and whose cool forest paths climb well above the Jialing River. At the mountain's base stands the Chongqing Natural History Museum, whose halls of fossils and dinosaur skeletons make it one of the largest of its kind in western China.
Nearer the river lie the North Spring pools. These hot springs, set among old garden courtyards, gave Beibei its bathing name long before the light rail reached this far.
What is the history of Beibei District?
Beibei began as a river town. Rafts and junks worked the Jialing River trade long before the borough took its modern shape, and the North Spring drew bathers to the water's edge for generations. The district was formally organised in 1951, gathering the riverside settlements below Jinyun Mountain under one seat at Tiansheng.
Growth followed the schools. When Southwest University consolidated its campuses here, Beibei settled into its role as a study town and spring resort on the northern approaches to Chongqing rather than a factory quarter.
