The Peach Blossom Spring is the fabled sight of Changde. The wooded valley of Taohuayuan, said to be the hidden paradise of the old tale, lies among the hills west of the city, the emblem of the region, in the country nearby. A poem wall lines the water.
The long river dike bears thousands of carved poems along its face, while the ancient walled site, the museum, and the old city wall mark the streets of Changde.
What is the history of Changde?
Changde is one of the oldest settled places in China. On the plain nearby, farmers built a walled town and grew rice more than six thousand years ago, among the earliest known in the land. Rice grew here first.
The people of the Yuan farmed the wet plain and raised their walls long before the empires rose in the north. A poet made the country famous. In the fifth century the writer Tao Yuanming set his tale of a hidden valley, the Peach Blossom Spring, in the hills near Changde, and the fable of that lost paradise made the name known across China.
War came in the end. In 1943 a terrible battle was fought for Changde against the invading army, a stand so hard it was likened to Stalingrad, and much of the town was destroyed and rebuilt. The river still runs to the lake.
Changde keeps its river and its peach country by the Dongting.

Changde lies in the north of Hunan in China, on the Yuan River near Dongting Lake. The city sits on the river where it winds across a plain of rice and water toward the great lake, in a low green country of paddies, rivers, and hills, with the mountains of western Hunan rising beyond. Flat green paddies spread around.

Changde sits in humid subtropical country, warm through most of the year. Hot summers and mild winters cross the lake country, with heavy rain in the summer and great floods when the rivers and the lake rise. The heat hangs wet over the paddies.

How do you get to Changde?
Changde lies in northern Hunan, on the roads and rail west of Changsha. Fast trains and highways run to it from Changsha across the lake plain, and roads run out to the peach country. Boats reach Dongting Lake nearby.
