What is the history of Zhangjiajie?
Zhangjiajie long lay hidden in the mountains. For centuries the remote valleys held Tujia and Miao hill people, far from the Chinese heartland, and the strange stone forest was known only to a few. Then painters and poets found it.
Word of the towering pillars and misty gorges spread, and in the late twentieth century the land became the first national forest park in China, opening the wonder to the world. The film world made it famous. The floating peaks of a great science-fiction film were said to be drawn from these pillars, and crowds began to pour in from across China and beyond.
Builders hung walkways on the cliffs. Glass bridges, a mountaintop cable car, and a skywalk were cut into the rock to carry visitors among the peaks, and Zhangjiajie grew into a great tourist city. The old valleys still hold their villages.
