What are the main landmarks in Hanzhong?
The tomb of Zhuge Liang lies in the hills above Hanzhong. The temple and grave of the great strategist, set among the trees at the foot of Mount Dingjun, draw those who honour him, the emblem of the basin, in the country nearby. A Silk Road explorer rests here too.
The tomb of Zhang Qian, who opened the road to the west, stands in the fields outside the town, while the plank-road inscriptions, the grave of Cai Lun, and the old city sites mark the country around Hanzhong.
What is the history of Hanzhong?
Hanzhong gave its name to a dynasty and a people. When the empire fell into war two thousand years ago, the warlord Liu Bang was made King of Han here in the basin, and from Hanzhong he marched out to win the throne and found the Han dynasty. The land named the people.
From the river Han and the town of Hanzhong came the name of the dynasty and of the Han people themselves, the great majority of China. Great men lived and died in the basin. The strategist Zhuge Liang led his campaigns north from Hanzhong and was buried in its hills, the explorer Zhang Qian who opened the Silk Road came from here, and the man who invented paper was laid to rest in its ground.
The plank roads crossed the mountains. Timber roads on posts, cut into the cliffs of the Qinling, once carried the armies and the trade north to the capital, and their old inscriptions are treasured still. The mountains still wall the basin.

Where is Hanzhong?
Hanzhong lies in the far south of Shaanxi in China, in a basin on the Han River. The city sits in a warm green valley walled by great ranges, with the Qinling mountains rising to the north and the Daba mountains to the south, in a country of rice fields and citrus far milder than the north. Steep ranges close the basin.

What is the climate of Hanzhong?
Hanzhong has a mild, wet climate warmer than the north. Warm summers and cool winters cross the sheltered basin, kept mild by the mountain walls, with rain through much of the year and rare snow. Mist fills the valley in the mornings.

How do you get to Hanzhong?
Hanzhong lies in southern Shaanxi, over the Qinling mountains from Xi'an. Fast trains now tunnel through the ranges to it from Xi'an and Chengdu, and highways cross the passes. Old roads climb into the mountains.
