About Lichtenrade

Where to stay in Lichtenrade
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Lichtenrade is a settled village quarter of Berlin, its low streets gathered around the Dorfkirche Lichtenrade and its old green. Rooms for travellers are hard to find in Lichtenrade. Travellers who come to Lichtenrade tend to be visiting the churches, among them the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche and the Kirche Zu den heiligen Märtyrern von Afrika, and most sleep closer to the centre of Berlin.
The streets stay quiet. If you would rather rest in a plain, church-marked quarter near the Dorfkirche Lichtenrade than beside the crowds of central Berlin, Lichtenrade will suit you.
About Lichtenrade
What are the main landmarks in Lichtenrade?
The Dorfkirche Lichtenrade stands at the core of Lichtenrade, the village church its older streets grew around. Newer parishes ring it, from the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche to the Kirche Zu den heiligen Märtyrern von Afrika, and a sober marker recalls the district's darkest years: the memorial to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Lichtenrade Subcamp. The old green holds.
Faith and memory mark these streets.
What is the history of Lichtenrade?
Lichtenrade grew from a farming village that Berlin reached only late, its beginnings preserved in the Dorfkirche Lichtenrade and the green at its heart. Fields once ringed it. As the city spread outward the village became a quiet quarter, gaining the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Kirche while keeping its older lines.
The twentieth century's conflict left a scar on Lichtenrade. A memorial to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Lichtenrade Subcamp records the forced labour once held here.
