About Märkisches Viertel
What are the main landmarks in Märkisches Viertel?
The Seggeluchbecken, the larger of the two lakes in the north of the estate, is named after sedge and marsh, and a road bridge divides it. Werner Düttmann designed the Catholic parish centre of St. Martin. The Märkisches Zentrum mall opened in 2000.
It joins the Fontane-Haus cultural centre, an indoor pool and the Thomas-Mann-Gymnasium around the central market square.
What is the history of Märkisches Viertel?
Märkisches Viertel was the first large new estate in what was then West Berlin. A survey of 1959 found the garden sheds and makeshift homes on the site unhygienic, and in 1962 the architects Hans Christian Müller, Georg Heinrichs and Werner Düttmann drew up the plan. Tenants arrived from August 1964.
The last block was handed over in 1974. Part of Wittenau until then, it became a locality of its own in June 1999.

Märkisches Viertel adjoins Lübars to the north, Waidmannslust to the north-west, Wittenau to the west, and Rosenthal and Wilhelmsruh of Pankow to the east.
