What are the main landmarks in Herrenhausen?
Herrenhausen holds two of the Herrenhausen Gardens. The Großer Garten counts among the most important Baroque gardens in Europe. The Berggarten keeps the Welfenmausoleum, the burial place of the Hanoverian line of the Welfs, along with a tropical Sea Life aquarium in its former rainforest house, and the Royal Garden Library belongs to the gardens too.
Out in the streets, the Lutheran Herrenhäuser Kirche dates from 1904 to 1906.
What is the history of Herrenhausen?
Herrenhausen began as Hagerinhusen, a settlement on sand dunes at the edge of the Leine marshes, first named in a deed of 1216. A charter dated 1022 proved a 12th-century copy or forgery. The present name took hold from 1666, after Schloss Herrenhausen, the summer residence of the Welfs.
In 1725 the Treaty of Herrenhausen sought to bind the Hohenzollerns and the Welfs together. The village joined Hannover in 1891.

Herrenhausen lies between the Hannover-Minden railway to the north and the Leine to the south-west, with An der Graft and the Franziusweg as its eastern edge.
