Nobody stays here on purpose. Suderwich is miners' housing and farmland at the edge of Recklinghausen, and the reason to be out here is the two listed colonies, which repay a walk in a way the rest of the Stadtteil does not. Half the boundary is the city boundary. Castrop-Rauxel lies over it to the south and east, with Pöppinghausen, Habinghorst and Henrichenburg on the far side, and Datteln-Horneburg touches the northern corner.
Recklinghausen proper holds the rooms.

What are the main landmarks in Suderwich?
The colonies are the built heritage. Paul Niegisch drew the Alte Kolonie built between 1901 and 1905 just east of the König Ludwig 4/5 pit, fifty-three double houses holding three hundred and eighteen dwellings, with the first foremen's houses on the Katharinenstraße. The Neue Kolonie followed in 1909.
It went up further east on the Cheruskerstraße, the Bruktererstraße and the Sigambrerstraße, and the Im Heidekämpchen settlement dated to 1929 came later again, scattered among other small estates through the village. Only two of the three are listed. The Alte Kolonie and Heidekämpchen carry protection while the well preserved Neue Kolonie does not, and the Becklemer Busch nature reserve at the eastern tip covers forty-six hectares of the remaining open ground.
What is the history of Suderwich?
Germanic settlers came in the second century. Perhaps the Sugambri first, and the name Suderwick surfaces around 1066 in the tithe list of the Essen-Werden monastery, by which time the farms were already held in fee, the three Schultenhöfe Önting, Dobbeling and Pepping among them. Cologne held the ground.
Suderwich belonged to the Vest Recklinghausen under the archbishop, with Recklinghausen the seat of justice and Horneburg the place of administration, and the village lived off arable and cattle with pasture and timber from the Emscherbruch and the Esselerloh. The commons lasted three centuries. From 1457 the Suderwich Markgenossenschaft counted seventy share holders, and the joint use began to be dissolved from 1765, by which time war had brought billeting, contributions and plunder more than once.
Coal changed it all in one year. The double shaft König-Ludwig IV/V was sunk in 1900 and turned a farming village into industrial country, the farmers doing well out of the land the pit needed, and a Catholic elementary school opened on the Henrichenburger Straße in 1909 with five hundred and sixty pupils on its roll by 1919.
Where is Suderwich?
Suderwich runs from the A2, which cuts off an almost empty southern strip with the Brandheide, north over the railway to the core village of Alt Surk, bordering Castrop-Rauxel and Datteln-Horneburg along half its edge and Essel, Berghausen and Röllinghausen inside Recklinghausen.
