Gaarden suits a stay close to the centre of Kiel: the Hörnbrücke takes walkers and cyclists quickly across to Kiel Hauptbahnhof. Its own centre is the Vinetaplatz. About Gaarden
What are the main landmarks in Gaarden?
Gaarden's Volkspark was laid out in 1899 as the shipyard park and is still thought a park worth seeing. The Vinetaplatz took its name in 1903 from the cruiser Vineta. To the south, Gaarden-Süd keeps large green spaces such as the Vieburger Gehölz, while the former Seibel margarine factory has housed the adult education centre's music school since 2006.
What is the history of Gaarden?
Gaarden is first mentioned in 1210, at the founding of Preetz Abbey, and grew from the two villages of Hemminghestorpe and Wulvesbrooke. In the 1860s three large shipyards opened on the east bank, among them the Germaniawerft and the Howaldtswerke. Their workforce made the village boom.
Gaarden-Ost joined Kiel in 1901 and Gaarden-Süd in 1910, and bombing of the U-boat yards and of its housing left the edges of Gaarden-Ost in ruins.

Gaarden-Ost climbs from the Hörn onto a once boggy terrace, and the quarter is ringed by Ellerbek, Elmschenhagen, Wellsee, Kronsburg, Meimersdorf and Hassee.
