Where to stay in Suchsdorf
The practical side of choosing where to sleep.
The built half sits in the middle. Dense housing fills the ground between the Kronshagen-Ottendorfer Au on the west, the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal on the north, the Bundesstraße 76 on the east and the Steenbeker Weg on the south, and a large industrial and commercial area runs south of that. The western half is farmland.
Farms, fields and woods take up most of it, broken only at the Schwartenbeker Kanalweiche by a group of houses built for canal officials. Part of the Projensdorfer Gehölz lies east of the Bundesstraße.
About Suchsdorf
What are the main landmarks in Suchsdorf?
The stream gave the newest quarter its name. Its older name was the Schwartenbek, Low German for the black brook, and the Suchsdorf an der Au housing area is named after it, having gone by the working title Suchsdorf-West while it was being planned around 1990. The Lehmberg is the high point.
It reaches twenty-six metres southwest of Gut Schwartenbek and west of the Kiel-West substation, which in this landscape counts as a hill. Four footpaths cross the Stadtteil. The Kanalwanderweg, the path along the Au, the Suchsdorfer Holm and the Lehmberg path connect it overland to Ottendorf and Kronshagen, and the canal path runs from Brunsbüttel to Kiel by way of Quarnbek and Kiel-Wik.
What is the history of Suchsdorf?
Suchsdorf was its own commune until 1958. It belonged to the Kreis Rendsburg and was incorporated into the Kiel city area that year, which is why it still reads as a village core with a city grown up to meet it. The stream carries the older name.
Schwartenbek is the Low German for black brook and was what the Kronshagen-Ottendorfer Au was called before, and the estate of Gut Schwartenbek southwest of the Lehmberg keeps the name too. The canal reordered the north. The Nord-Ostsee-Kanal forms the northern boundary, the Schwartenbeker Kanalweiche sits on it, and the group of houses there was built for the officials who worked the canal.
Building came late and in one place. Around 1990 the Suchsdorf an der Au area was planned under the working title Suchsdorf-West, which is the last large addition to a Stadtteil whose western half is still farms and woods.
