About Christiania

Where to stay in Christiania
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Christianshavn is the address that matters. Christiania occupies a former army barracks inside the Christianshavn neighbourhood, so a visitor who wants a bed near the free town books in Christianshavn or in central Copenhagen instead. That suits you if a walk through the former barracks and along Pusher Street is the reason for the trip.
Lille Mølle is one of the markers listed close by. Kløvermarkens Idrætsanlæg gives the surrounding stretch its open playing fields, useful if a green break matters more than the shops on the way in.
About Christiania
What are the main landmarks in Christiania?
Pusher Street is the name most visitors arrive knowing. The street ran an open illegal cannabis trade until 2024, when Danish police and most of the free town's own people dug it up and closed the greater part of that business down. Lille Mølle, the little mill, stands among the Christianshavn markers around the free town.
Kløvermarkens Idrætsanlæg spreads its sports grounds nearby. Beyond those, what people come for is the ground itself: barrack blocks handed to an intentional community since 1971, walked rather than ticketed.
What is the history of Christiania?
It began in 1971. Squatters moved onto an abandoned military base in Christianshavn and declared a self-governing free town, a city within the city set up as an alternative to mainstream culture. The commune carries several names: Freetown Christiania in full, Christiania in short, and Staden among those who live there.
Pusher Street changed in 2024, when the open cannabis trade there was largely shut down and the street dug up.
Where is Christiania?
Christiania fills a former barracks site inside the Christianshavn neighbourhood of Copenhagen, with Kløvermarkens Idrætsanlæg on the ground nearby.
