The canal was cut in the 17th century. Nyhavn opened as a working waterfront running between Kongens Nytorv and the Inner Harbour, and the townhouses that went up along both quays date from the 17th and early 18th centuries. Bars, cafes and restaurants took the ground floors later, turning the quay into an entertainment district.
