Nørrebro, Copenhagen — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Nørrebro is an inner district of Copenhagen, northwest of the city centre beyond the site of the old Northern Gate.

About Nørrebro

Where to stay in Nørrebro

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

Nørreport station is the anchor. Nørrebro begins northwest of the city centre, past the point where the old Northern Gate stood until 1856, so a bed here sits outside the historic core with Nørreport station the nearest link to the centre. The district reads as perhaps the most multicultural part of Copenhagen, which suits you if street life and shops matter more than sights.

Boutique shopping sits beside grand middle-class blocks. Sankt Johannes Kirke and LiteraturHaus give the streets their markers, and Politimuseet holds a collection a few blocks off.

About Nørrebro

What are the main landmarks in Nørrebro?

Churches mark the corners here. Sankt Johannes Kirke, Bethlehemskirken and Anna Kirke each hold a parish of their own, spaced across a district that grew outward from the old gate rather than around a single square. Politimuseet keeps the police collection, and LiteraturHaus runs as a literary house on the same inner streets.

Mod lyset and the Monument for grevinde Danner are the marked memorials. Botanisk Haves gartnerbolig, the botanical garden's gardener's house, completes the shorter list.

What is the history of Nørrebro?

The gate came down in 1856. Nørrebro lay outside that gate, on the ground northwest of the city centre, and Copenhagen Municipality later counted it among its ten official districts as the built city reached out past the old line. Nørreport station stands close to where the Northern Gate once was, a reminder in the name itself.

Later arrivals reshaped whole streets, and the district carries a cross-section of Danish society from boutique shopping through grand middle-class blocks.

Where is Nørrebro?

Nørrebro lies northwest of the Copenhagen city centre, an inner district on the far side of where the old Northern Gate stood.
