About Casco
What are the main landmarks in Casco?
Most of the city's main monuments stand in Casco, among them the Catedral del Salvador, known as La Seo, and the Roman remains of the city, from the walls and the theatre to the river port, the forum and the baths. Four museums open those Roman sites. They are the Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta, the Museo del Teatro de Caesaraugusta, the Museum of the Public Baths of Caesaraugusta and the Museum of the River Port of Caesaraugusta.
Renaissance palaces include the Casa de Miguel Donlope and the Palacio de Montemuzo, seat of the municipal archive. The cathedral's tapestry museum is in La Seo, and the Pablo Gargallo Museum, the Goya Museum and the diocesan Alma Mater Museum are close at hand.
What is the history of Casco?
Its street plan keeps the order of Roman Caesar Augusta: Calle Don Jaime I follows the cardo, and Manifestación, Espoz y Mina and Mayor the decumanus. El Coso marked the end of the walled city, which had four gates, and the market gate in the west was its busiest point, where the Mercado Central stands. Calle Conde Aranda marks the first expansion.
On 14 January 1990 a fire at the Flying disco in Calle Trinidad became the worst tragedy in the city's history.
Where is Casco?
Casco is the second-largest historic centre in Spain. It takes in the whole area within the Roman walls of the third century, which enclosed all of Zaragoza until the 13th century, together with the city's early growth before the 20th century. Calle Asalto, El Coso, César Augusto and María Agustín mark its limits, and it borders the districts of Margen Izquierda, La Almozara, Centro and Las Fuentes.
