About La Bonanova

What are the main landmarks in La Bonanova?

In La Bonanova, Antoni Gaudí built the Torre de Bellesguard between 1900 and 1909 for Jaume Figueras. It stands on the ruins of the palace of Martin the Humane, the last king of the house of Barcelona, and its cisterns and the lower part of its walls are medieval. CosmoCaixa is a popular science museum.

The church of la Bonanova stands where the old church of Sant Gervasi i Protasi was. Casa Roviralta and Casa Manuel Arnús are among its villas.

What is the history of La Bonanova?

Sant Gervasi de Cassoles was once an independent municipality, together with Sant Gervasi - Galvany. A door lintel dated 1845 suggests that many houses were remodelled by the 1840s. Then the Bonanova sector grew.

From the 1890s villas went up for families back from the Americas with large fortunes, money tied in part to the illegal slave trade. Doctor Andreu bought plots here for modernista buildings and also created the Tibidabo funicular and the Tramvia Blau. About 40 percent of the towers were pulled down in the 1970s and 1980s.

Where is La Bonanova?

La Bonanova neighbours Tibidabo and runs along the road built in the 1890s to join Sant Gervasi to Sarrià.
