About Poble Sec
What are the main landmarks in Poble Sec?
Montjuïc Castle crowns the summit above Poble Sec. After 1714 the hill became a military zone, and building below it was barred so that nothing would block the castle's guns. The Paral·lel keeps El Molino, the Teatre Apolo, the Teatre Victòria, the Teatre Condal and the Gran Teatre Espanyol, known as the Sala Barts.
The Parc del Mirador del Poble Sec was laid out between 1995 and 1997.
What is the history of Poble Sec?
The coast of Poble Sec served the Iberians and Romans as a natural harbour, used until the 10th century and now and then until the 14th. Farm plots once filled the ground between the mountain and the city wall. Cerdà's Eixample plan left it out.
From 1858 landowners built plain workers' houses as they chose: the França Xica, Santa Madrona and the Hortes de Sant Bertran, later grouped as Poble Sec. La Canadenca, the Paral·lel power station of 1882, helped end the military limits. The historian Miquel Badenas traces the name to textile mills that dried up the wells of the Hortes de Sant Bertran.
Where is Poble Sec?
Poble Sec lies between Montjuïc and the Avinguda del Paral·lel, the avenue that separates it from el Raval, in the Sants-Montjuïc district. The port and the Fira de Barcelona close the rest.
