About Sant Antoni
What are the main landmarks in Sant Antoni?
The Sant Antoni market fills the block between the carrers Comte Borrell, Manso, Comte d'Urgell and Tamarit. Antoni Rovira i Trias designed it, it was built between 1872 and 1882, and stalls of second-hand books and collectables ring it every Sunday morning. A full renovation began in 2007.
It reopened on 23 May 2018. The bar Els Tres Tombs stands right next to it, and the Avinguda de Mistral follows the line of an important medieval road out of Barcelona.
What is the history of Sant Antoni?
Sant Antoni's origins are tied to the vanished church of Sant Antoni in the Raval. The barri itself was built up from the 1880s, as Barcelona grew beyond its medieval walls. Few houses yet surrounded the market.
Most of its buildings date from the 1920s and 1930s, the years of the 1929 International Exposition, and it was a working-class area for most of the 20th century. The Tres Tombs festival, held since the second half of the 19th century, honours Saint Anthony the Abbot, protector of animals.
