About Abrantes
What are the main landmarks in Abrantes?
The church of San Benito, built in 1963-64 to designs by Luis Vázquez de Castro Sarmiento, stands in the Pan Bendito estate. The Parque Emperatriz María de Austria, known as Parque Sur, is the barrio's main green space, with a lake and a bike track. It is one of the district's largest.
A Thursday market fills the Vía Lusitana. Close by lies the mural El Árbol de la Vida, and Palacio Vistalegre lies toward Vista Alegre.
What is the history of Abrantes?
Pan Bendito began as provisional housing for workers. It was built with the Vista Alegre colony in 1957 and 1963, and in 1980 the national housing institute rehoused its families under a barrio remodelling programme; the present blocks and towers date from 1975 to 1990. Metro line 11 reached Pan Bendito in 1998.
