About Argüelles
What are the main landmarks in Argüelles?
Argüelles holds the Cerralbo Museum. The Templo Nacional de Santa Teresa de Jesús, with its convent of Discalced Carmelites, stands in the barrio too. Its streets mix sober postwar buildings of brick and granite with mid-20th-century functionalist blocks of straight lines and little ornament, a cityscape of monumental and plain modern side by side.
Two of its edges are the calle de la Princesa and the plaza de España.
What is the history of Argüelles?
Argüelles was born in the 19th century, when the monarchy of Isabel II had the Montaña del Príncipe Pío built up as an elegant residential quarter. The first blocks were laid out in 1855. Plots went on sale from 1859, along with sewers, street lighting and water supply.
The quarter joined the Plan Castro extension, which opened streets such as Princesa and Ventura Rodríguez, and it came to rank beside Salamanca among the bourgeois barrios of 19th-century Madrid.
