What are the main landmarks in Bellas Vistas?
The Church of San Francisco de Sales, a listed building, stands in Bellas Vistas, as do the Hospital Central de la Cruz Roja San José y Santa Adela and the Iglesia del Cristo de la Misericordia. Close by lie the Typhlological Museum and Velintonia, a historic house. Toward Rios Rosas stand the Museo Geominero and the Escuela Superior de Ingenieros de Minas, with the Museo de la Guardia Civil toward Vallehermoso.
What is the history of Bellas Vistas?
Its origins go back to the War of Africa. In 1860 the victorious army camped on the dehesa de Amaniel north of Madrid, traders settled around the camp, and the settlement of Tetuán de las Victorias grew up. Bellas Vistas began as a poor quarter on the west side of the Road of France, now the calle de Bravo Murillo, and Vicente Blasco Ibáñez named it among the rag-pickers' barrios in his novel La horda (1905).
Where is Bellas Vistas?
Its limits are the avenida de la Reina Victoria to the south, the calle de Francos Rodríguez to the north, the avenida de Pablo Iglesias to the west and the calle de Bravo Murillo to the east, and it covers about 0.72 km². The street plan is irregular, fitted to difficult ground, with narrow streets that are hard to get around.
