About Gaztambide
What are the main landmarks in Gaztambide?
Gaztambide's Casa de las Flores, designed by Secundino Zuazo in 1931, is a landmark of Madrid rationalism, named for the balconies with flower boxes on its exposed-brick front. Pablo Neruda, Severo Ochoa and Rómulo Gallegos lived there. It was declared a bien de interés cultural in 1981.
The Conjunto Residencial Galaxia, from the 1970s, is a good example of Madrid brutalism.
What is the history of Gaztambide?
Gaztambide settled in the 20th century into a residential area with a strong student presence, close to the Ciudad Universitaria and full of bars, bookshops and cafés. That student life gave the barrio a lively, culturally active character. The Casa de las Flores was badly damaged in the Civil War.
It was restored in the 1940s.
