About Pacífico
What are the main landmarks in Pacífico?
The iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Paz stands in Pacífico. So does the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Atocha, where members of the Spanish royal family are traditionally baptised, with the Panteón de Hombres Ilustres beside it, built between 1892 and 1899 by Fernando Arbós y Tremanti. The National Museum of Anthropology and the Royal Observatory of Madrid lie close by, and El Retiro Park lies toward Jerónimos.
What is the history of Pacífico?
The street name recalls the Spanish Navy's war expeditions to Hispanic America in 1865. The barrio grew along the avenida Ciudad de Barcelona, residential to the north and industrial beside the railway yards to the south. Its old barracks, the Cuarteles de Daoíz y Velarde, made it a flashpoint in the Civil War.
They became a sports centre in 2003. On 11 March 2004 the Madrid train bombings struck the tracks on the calle de Téllez, behind the sports centre, which served as a field hospital.
Where is Pacífico?
Pacífico is bounded by the paseo de la Infanta Isabel, the paseo de la Reina Cristina, the avenida del Mediterráneo, the calle del Doctor Esquerdo and the railway tracks. Its neighbours are Jerónimos, Niño Jesús, Estrella and Adelfas. It covers about 0.75 km².
