The Bilbao-Behobia motorway passes through Ibaeta, with the Enlace de Ibaeta and the stretch called El Infierno both inside the barrio. The Campus Universitario Sur fills part of it. El Antiguo lies northeast, Ayete east, Añorga south and Igueldo west.

Jokoenea is the one building the register names for Ibaeta. The barrio's zones carry the older names instead: Arriola, Tolare, Berio, Illarra, Errotaburu and Loistarain among them. Loistarain is the oldest of all.
What is the history of Ibaeta?
Loistarain is among the oldest place names in San Sebastián. It appears as Loiçtarain in a donation charter of the kingdom of Pamplona dated 1178, in which king Sancho el Sabio, who founded the city, confirmed his father García Ramírez's gift of the term of Loiçtarain, between Orio and Igueldo, to the church of Pamplona. Ibaeta itself became one of the city's administrative barrios in 2003.

Ibaeta sits on the west of San Sebastián, with El Antiguo to the northeast, Ayete to the east, Añorga to the south and southwest and Igueldo to the west. Rural land lies north, east and above all southeast. The A-8 crosses it.
