Where to stay in Kangasala

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Kangasala carries a working stock of beds, a lakeside town of Pirkanmaa with hotels, guesthouses and lakeside cottages within reach of the larger city to the west. The old centre around the Kangasalan kirkko suits visitors who want the medieval church, the town shops and the Kangasalan kotiseutumuseo within an easy walk, with the Kirkkoharju ridge rising close behind. It is the simplest base.

Up on the ridge and out along the lakes, cabins and summer cottages stand near the Kirkkoharjun näkötorni tower and the Karjalainen kulttuurikeskus Äijälä, a fine base for the lakeland of south-western Finland by boat or by car. Beds are easy to find. Many travellers instead sleep in the larger neighbouring city of Tampere and drive east into Kangasala for the day.

Book ahead in summer, when the lakeside rooms fill early.

About Kangasala

What is Kangasala known for?

Kangasala is known as a lakeside town of Pirkanmaa, set on the long Kirkkoharju ridge between the lakes of south-western Finland. A high esker gives it its fame. The Kirkkoharjun näkötorni tower looks out over the water from the crest, while the medieval Kangasalan kirkko holds the old centre and the Kangasalan kotiseutumuseo keeps the local past.

Karelian heritage gathers here too, kept at the Karjalainen kulttuurikeskus Äijälä in this corner of south-western Finland.

What are the main landmarks in Kangasala?

The Kangasalan kirkko is the landmark of the old centre, the medieval stone church at the heart of Kangasala in Pirkanmaa. A ridge rises behind it. High on the crest, the Kirkkoharjun näkötorni tower crowns the long Kirkkoharju esker, looking out over the lakes on either side, while the Kangasalan kotiseutumuseo keeps the local past in the old buildings of the town.

Karelian heritage has a home here too, gathered at the Karjalainen kulttuurikeskus Äijälä, marking the lake town of this corner of south-western Finland.

What is the history of Kangasala?

Kangasala is old in its ground. Settlement gathered early on the dry crest of the Kirkkoharju ridge, where the high esker ran clear between the lakes of south-western Finland, and the medieval Kangasalan kirkko was raised in stone as the centre of a wide rural parish of Pirkanmaa. The ridge carried the road.

Farms and households spread along the high ground and the lake shores, and the church village grew at the foot of the esker as the heart of the parish. The parish was set on its own civil footing when Kangasala was chartered in 1865, a lakeside municipality of farmland, forest and water east of Tampere. War brought new people.

Karelians resettled here after the lost eastern lands gathered the heritage now kept at the Karjalainen kulttuurikeskus Äijälä, while the local past was drawn into the Kangasalan kotiseutumuseo. The lookout tower of the Kirkkoharjun näkötorni rose over the ridge, and Kangasala grew into a lakeside town of Pirkanmaa within reach of the city to the west.

Where is Kangasala?

Kangasala lies on the long Kirkkoharju ridge of Pirkanmaa, in the lake country of south-western Finland east of Tampere. A high esker runs through the town between two lakes, the old centre gathered by the Kangasalan kirkko at its foot while water spreads out on either side. The ridge gives the long view.

High on the crest, the Kirkkoharjun näkötorni tower rises above the lakes, and pinewoods, farmland and summer shores fill the country of Kangasala across this corner of south-western Finland.

What is the climate of Kangasala?

Kangasala has the cold lakeland weather of Pirkanmaa, its winters long and snowbound over the frozen lakes on either side of the ridge. The lakes freeze hard each winter. Summers run mild and warm across the esker and the shores around the Kangasalan kirkko, the long northern light drawing out the warm season on the Kirkkoharju ridge and the summer cottages, before the dark and the hard frost close back over this corner of south-western Finland.

How do you get to Kangasala?

Kangasala sits just east of Tampere, linked to the city by the main road that runs the lakeland of south-western Finland. Most arrive by car or bus. The route from Tampere reaches the old centre by the Kangasalan kirkko and the foot of the Kirkkoharju ridge, with the airport and rail hub of the city close at hand.

Buses link Kangasala into the wider region of Pirkanmaa, and from there the Finnish road network reaches across the country.
