Hietalahti took shape as Vaasa rebuilt and grew on its present site by the Gulf of Bothnia. Civic buildings clustered here. Where is Hietalahti?

Hietalahti lies in southern Vaasa, close to the core of this Ostrobothnian city on the Gulf of Bothnia coast of western Finland. It is a built-up district. Its grid of streets carries much of Vaasa's civic life, from churches and museums to the city's ice hall, and it sits among the inner districts rather than out by the open water.

Suvilahti adjoins it to the south-east, and the harbour quarters of Palosaaren keskus lie across the city toward the sea.
