About Vanha Vaasa
What are the main landmarks in Vanha Vaasa?
The ruins are the draw. Vanhan Vaasan rauniot preserve the footprint of the destroyed first town, and the Vanhan Vaasan museo tells its story, while Mustasaaren kirkko stands as the surviving parish church on this south-eastern side of Vaasa. The Korsholman linna ground lies close by.
Four old monuments in one quarter.
What is the history of Vanha Vaasa?
This is where the city began. Vaasa first stood here on the south-eastern ground before a great fire destroyed the old town, after which the centre was rebuilt closer to the Gulf of Bothnia coast, leaving Vanha Vaasa as the burnt-out original. The Vanhan Vaasan rauniot mark that lost town.
Stone shells remain. The Korsholman linna site and the Mustasaaren kirkko both survive from that earlier Vaasa.
Where is Vanha Vaasa?
Vanha Vaasa lies inland of the harbour. It occupies the south-eastern side of Vaasa, set back from the Gulf of Bothnia coast on which the city sits, in western Finland (Ostrobothnia). The district of Huutoniemi rounds off toward the east of it.
