This is a quiet quarter. Julkula carries no monuments of its own, and its bearings come instead from the districts around it and the city it belongs to, with Puijonlaakso along the south-eastern side and the rest of Kuopio reaching off toward the centre. The streets are its own.
Houses and apartment blocks hold the north-western ground here, a settled residential pocket of eastern Finland that leaves the landmarks to the wider lakeland city.
What is the history of Julkula?
The quarter grew outward. As Kuopio spread north-westward across the lakeland in the later twentieth century, the woods and shoreline ground on this side of the city filled with housing and Julkula took shape as a suburban district of eastern Finland. The growth came in steadily.
New apartment streets joined the older houses, the neighbouring quarter of Puijonlaakso rose along the same reach toward the Puijo ridge, and over the years Julkula settled into a calm residential corner of Kuopio, well back from the older central districts such as Niirala that built the original town.

Julkula lies in north-western Kuopio. The quarter spreads across the lakeland edge of the city, a residential reach of houses and apartment streets set out from the centre, with the district of Puijonlaakso off to the south-east and the built-up area of Kuopio carrying on toward the heart of this part of eastern Finland.
