Männistö, Kuopio — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Two churches mark the quarter. Pyhän Johanneksen kirkko, the church of Saint John, stands at the centre of the north-eastern streets of Kuopio and gives Männistö its main bearing, while the smaller Pyhän Joosefin kirkko, the church of Saint Joseph, keeps its own corner nearby. The parishes set the tone.

Around them the pine-grove ground holds apartment blocks and houses, a settled quarter of eastern Finland whose landmarks are its two churches rather than any tower or museum.

The pine ground filled with housing. As Kuopio grew north-eastward across the lakeland, the wooded grove that gives the quarter its name took on apartment blocks and streets, and Männistö became a residential district of eastern Finland. The parishes came with the people.

Pyhän Johanneksen kirkko rose to serve the new streets and the smaller Pyhän Joosefin kirkko joined it nearby, and over the years the grove settled into a calm corner of Kuopio set back from the central districts such as Niirala that built the older town.

Männistö lies in north-eastern Kuopio. The quarter spreads across the pine-grove ground that gives it its name, apartment streets gathered around Pyhän Johanneksen kirkko and the smaller Pyhän Joosefin kirkko, set on the lakeland side of the city and reaching back toward the central districts of this part of eastern Finland.
