What are the main landmarks in Haaga?
Haaga marks itself with small things. Huopalahden kirkko, the parish church, is the district's clearest landmark in northern Helsinki, its brick rising among the houses. Public sculpture fills out the rest: the figure of Pioneeri stands in the open, the Karl August Wreden muistokohokuva keeps a local memory in relief, and the work titled Planeetta turns its abstract form toward passers-by.
None of these draws crowds. They are the quiet markers of a settled Helsinki district, set among gardens between Etelä-Haaga and Pohjois-Haaga rather than along any tourist trail.
What is the history of Haaga?
Haaga began as its own town. Chartered in 1923 as a separate municipality on the western edge of the capital, it kept that status only briefly before being joined to Helsinki, which absorbed it into the Western major district. Suburban building followed the railway.
Through the twentieth century the fields gave way to housing, and Haaga split in everyday use into the linked quarters of Etelä-Haaga and Pohjois-Haaga, with churches such as Huopalahden kirkko marking the new neighbourhoods as the district settled into the green northern belt of Helsinki.
