Where to stay in Pitäjänmäki
The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.
Pitäjänmäki is a working district of Helsinki, better known for offices than for hotel beds. The rail line is its asset. A base near the Valimo railway station puts the trains into central Helsinki and out toward Espoo within easy reach, handy for business in the western quarter rather than for sightseeing.
Who it suits: you want a quiet, well-connected western foothold near the Pitäjänmäen tornitalo and the Talihalli sports hall, with the city centre a short rail ride east.
About Pitäjänmäki
What are the main landmarks in Pitäjänmäki?
The tower stands out first. Pitäjänmäen tornitalo rises above the district as its tallest building, near the working halls and the Valimo line. War memory is kept here too, at the hero-graves monument of Pitäjänmäen sankarihautamuistomerkki and the searchlight-women plaque of Valonheitinlottien muistolaatta, with the brothers-in-arms grave of Pohjois-Haagan veljeshauta close in the neighbouring district.
The outdoor sculpture of Valion ulkoilmaveistos sits by the old dairy works, and the sports hall of Talihalli serves the western suburbs.
What is the history of Pitäjänmäki?
Pitäjänmäki took shape around the railway on the western edge of Helsinki. Industry led the way. The Valimo railway station drew factories and works to the district through the twentieth century, and machine and engineering firms gathered along the line while apartment blocks rose for the workers between Pohjois-Haaga and the Espoo border.
War years left their mark, recorded at the memorial of Pitäjänmäen sankarihautamuistomerkki. Later the tower of Pitäjänmäen tornitalo rose above it all.
Where is Pitäjänmäki?
Pitäjänmäki lies in north-western Helsinki, against the city's western edge. The Espoo border runs close. The district spreads either side of the Valimo railway station, a working quarter of offices and apartment blocks where the rail line out of central Helsinki crosses toward the neighbouring city.
Pohjois-Haaga and Konala adjoin it. The tall Pitäjänmäen tornitalo marks the skyline.
