What is the history of Katajanokka?
The first big plan for Helsinki left Katajanokka out. Drawn in the middle of the eighteenth century, that plan set a ring of fortifications around the city on paper, and the ground that became this district fell outside the line. That exclusion did not last.
Katajanokka sits against the immediate downtown area, with Kruununhaka beside it and Merikasarmi holding the largest single site on its ground.
