Where to stay in Kontula

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Beds are scarce here. Kontula is a dense post-war housing district on the north-eastern side of Helsinki, an estate of tall apartment blocks and a busy local shopping centre rather than hotels, well away from the inner city. The metro ties it in fast, and the Mikaelinkirkko and neighbouring Mellunmäki and Vesala sit close by.

Most visitors sleep nearer central Helsinki and ride the line out. The district suits you if you want a plain suburban base on the eastern metro in this corner of southern Finland.

About Kontula

What are the main landmarks in Kontula?

Kontula keeps few formal landmarks, a high-rise estate on the north-eastern edge of Helsinki built for housing rather than show. The estate is the monument. The Mikaelinkirkko serves the apartment streets as the district's chief building, and the sculpture Tuoksuva askel stands among the blocks, the handful of named markers in a quarter defined more by its towers and shopping centre than by old stone, between neighbouring Mellunmäki and Vesala.

What is the history of Kontula?

Kontula rose in the post-war decades as Helsinki pushed housing east, a large estate of concrete towers laid over former country ground in this corner of southern Finland. Cranes built it fast. The blocks went up around a central shopping centre, and the Mikaelinkirkko was raised to serve the new parish as families filled the apartments.

Later the eastern metro reached the district, binding it to the inner city and the neighbouring estates of Mellunmäki and Myllypuro, with the sculpture Tuoksuva askel set among the towers. Kontula settled into its part as a working housing district of the capital.

Where is Kontula?

Kontula lies on the north-eastern side of Helsinki, its apartment towers ringing a central shopping centre and the Mikaelinkirkko, with neighbouring Mellunmäki and Vesala close at hand on the eastern metro.
