What is the history of Maunula?
The district is post-war. As Helsinki rebuilt and spread north in the decades after the war, planners laid out Maunula as a model residential quarter of low blocks set in greenery, a counterpoint to the older garden suburb of Käpylä next door. Maunulan kirkko rose to serve the new parish.
Hyvän Paimenen kirkko followed among the courtyards, and the sculpture Planeetta marked the public space as the quarter settled into the city's northern edge near Oulunkylä.
