Where to stay in Ruskeasuo

The right area depends on your trip. Here's who each one suits — pick the place, then the hotel.

Ruskeasuo is a residential corner of north-western Helsinki, a district of apartment streets, sports grounds, and clinics rather than hotels. Beds are thin on the ground here. The Ruskeasuon urheilupuisto and the Ruskeasuon ratsastushalli give the quarter its open, green character, a calm base set back from the noise of central Helsinki yet close to Pasila and Meilahti next door.

Most visitors sleep nearer the centre and ride out, while the district itself suits travellers wanting a quiet northern footing in this part of southern Finland.

About Ruskeasuo

What are the main landmarks in Ruskeasuo?

The Ruskeasuon ratsastushalli is the building that names the district to Helsinki, a riding hall beside the broad green of the Ruskeasuon urheilupuisto. Open ground marks the quarter. The Pyhän Marian kirkko serves the local parish, and the Maila Talvion muistomerkki keeps a writer's memory among the trees.

Toward Meilahti next door stands the Alvar Aallon koti- ja ateljeerakennus, the architect's own house and studio, with the Meilahden kirkko and the Tamminiemi villa close at hand in this north-western corner of southern Finland.

What is the history of Ruskeasuo?

Ruskeasuo began as marshy ground on the northern edge of Helsinki, its name marking a brown bog before the city reached it in southern Finland. The wet land was drained and built. As Helsinki spread north the quarter filled with housing and institutions, the Ruskeasuon ratsastushalli rising to stable the city's horses and the Ruskeasuon urheilupuisto laid out as open sports ground.

The Pyhän Marian kirkko went up to serve the growing parish, and the district settled into its role as a calm residential and sporting corner of the capital beside Pasila.

Where is Ruskeasuo?

Ruskeasuo lies about three kilometres north of the Helsinki city centre in southern Finland, a green quarter between Pasila to the east and Meilahti to the south-west.
