Ullanlinna, Helsinki — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Ullanlinna carries some of Helsinki's quietest museums. The Designmuseo sits among its blocks, and the Sinebrychoffin taidemuseo holds old masters a short walk away. Two churches anchor the streets.

Johanneksenkirkko lifts its twin spires over the district, while the small Pyhän Henrikin katedraali serves the city's Catholics nearby. Up on the high ground the Helsingin observatorio looks out over the southern harbour, and the Mannerheim-museo keeps the marshal's home much as he left it. The Cygnaeuksen galleria rounds out a district where culture is housed in handsome rooms rather than crowds.

Ullanlinna grew as Helsinki spread south toward the sea. The grid was chartered in the 20th century's first decades, when the city laid out blocks of stone apartments across the slopes above the southern harbour. Restaurants put down roots early.

Restaurant Sea Horse opened in 1934 and drew the cultural elite, and the Russian house Saslik followed in 1972. Around them rose the churches and museums that still mark the district, leaving Ullanlinna a settled, well-built quarter of central Helsinki rather than a new suburb.

Ullanlinna lies in southern Helsinki in southern Finland, a peninsula district that runs from the Esplanadin puisto and Korkeavuorenkatu down toward the southern harbour, with Punavuori to its west.
