Vattuniemi, Helsinki — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Vattuniemi gathers a handful of markers on its small point. The Pyhän Jaakobin kirkko serves the southern end of the island, while the Lauttasaaren kirkko rises further north up Lauttasaari. Two memorials stand on the headland too.

The Myllykallion ilmatorjuntatykki -muistomerkki keeps an old anti-aircraft gun on the Myllykallio rock, and the Katkaistu elämä memorial marks the same height above the sea. Beyond these the quarter runs to flats, offices and shoreline rather than grand sights, with central Helsinki a short metro ride away across the water.

Vattuniemi began as the working point of Lauttasaari island. Factories and workshops took the southern tip while the rest of the island filled with homes, putting industry on the seaward edge of south-western Helsinki. War left its marks on the rock.

The Myllykallion ilmatorjuntatykki -muistomerkki recalls the gun batteries set on the Myllykallio height to guard the city by sea. As the old plants closed, flats and offices replaced them, and the Pyhän Jaakobin kirkko came to serve the rebuilt quarter. The point turned residential.

At the southern tip of Lauttasaari island, on the south-western edge of Helsinki in southern Finland, Vattuniemi is a dense seaside point of flats and offices ringed by marinas and shore.
