Sibbo is known for its old churches and its place in the green coastal belt of Uusimaa, in southern Finland. Sibbo's history turns on the church and the water. The parish gathered early along the Sipoonjoki, where the medieval castle of Sipoonlinna once stood guard over the valley and the bays of the Uusimaa coast. Defence came first.

The stone Sipoon vanha kirkko rose as the medieval heart of the parish, its separate belfry the Sipoon vanhan kirkon kellotapuli raised beside it, and around this old core the farms and island hamlets of southern Finland spread across a long-settled, Swedish-speaking countryside east of the capital. The later centuries reshaped the parish without erasing it. A second church, the Sipoon kirkko, came to serve the growing congregation, and a southern village formed around the Söderkullan kirkko as settlement spread down toward the coast.

Institutions followed. The Nikkilän sairaala was built as a large hospital at Nikkilä, its brick ranges a landmark of the inland parish, while the old rural pattern survived in villages like Hindsbyn kylä. Sibbo's long past is now gathered in the Sipoon kotiseutumuseo and the Sipoon koulumuseo, the museums that keep the memory of this corner of Uusimaa.

Sibbo spreads along the coast of Uusimaa in southern Finland, where the Sipoonjoki runs down through farm valleys to the bays and islands of the Gulf of Finland. Fields, forest and water make up the broad municipality. The land falls to the sea here.

The old parish centre sits inland by the Sipoon vanha kirkko, the southern settlement gathers at Söderkulla, and out beyond the shore the island of Fagerö lies among the skerries of the archipelago that fringes this stretch of the southern Finnish coast east of the capital.

Sibbo has a coastal climate softened by the Gulf of Finland, milder than the inland of southern Finland. Winters bring frost and snow to the Sipoonjoki valley and the fields of the parish, though the nearby sea keeps the cold less hard than it falls farther north and east. Summers are warm and light.

The long northern daylight warms the bays and the archipelago around Fagerö through the short growing season, the weeks when the cottages of the Uusimaa coast fill before the autumn turns the water grey.

Sibbo lies just east of the capital on the coast road through Uusimaa, and the car is the easiest way in. The motorway and main roads run close to the southern village of Söderkulla and on toward the old church centre by the Sipoon vanha kirkko, putting the municipality within a short drive of the capital. Buses run the route too.

They link Sibbo to the city and the wider coast of southern Finland, carrying travellers out to the parish and on toward the bays and islands of the Gulf of Finland.
