Where to stay in walled city of Saint-Malo

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

The walled city of Saint-Malo is the base for travellers who want to sleep inside the ramparts, among the granite townhouses rebuilt along Grand'Rue and rue Jacques Cartier. Everything sits within a rampart circuit of 1,754 m, so the cathedral, the castle and the sea gates are minutes apart on foot. Rooms on the outer side look over the sand to Fort National; the inner lanes are narrower and quieter.

Bon-Secours lies below the west wall. Gare de Saint-Malo stands about 1.5 km east, outside the gates, and Porte Saint-Vincent opens the wall on that side. It suits you if the tide table matters more than the car.

What is the history of walled city of Saint-Malo?

The walled city of Saint-Malo became a town of its own in 1145, when the bishop's seat crossed from Aleth to the rock and the monastic church became the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent. Duke Jean V began Saint Malo Castle on the isthmus in 1424 to hold the Malouins to their duke. After the Grande Brûlerie of 1661 the town had to build in stone, and shipowners raised granite mansions such as the hôtel d'Asfeld.

American shelling and fire took about 80 percent of the old town in August 1944, yet the walls stood. Louis Arretche was named chief architect that year, and rebuilding ran from 1948 to 1960. Salvaged stones were numbered and reused.
