Where to stay in Évreux
The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.
The centre is small enough to book blind. A room near the Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux and the Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux keeps the Église Saint-Michel d'Évreux and most of the town's tables inside the same few streets, which is all a one-night stop asks for. Beds here are not plentiful. Évreux is a departmental capital rather than a resort, so the central list is short and it shortens again whenever something is on at the complexe sportif Jean Bouin d'Évreux.
Navarre is the calmer alternative. The quarter around the église Saint-Germain de Navarre sits well back from the middle of town and suits you if a parking space counts for more than a five-minute walk to the museum, with the piscine plein soleil d'Évreux on that same side. A short drive links the two.
Nétreville, the Val Iton and the road out to Gravigny make up the third choice. The stade de Nétreville, the stade du Val Iton and the stade municipal de Gravigny mark that outer ring, the parc de l'hippodrome and the haras de Valême lie beyond it, and a bed among them is built for an early departure rather than an evening in the old streets. You lose the walk home.
Anyone here for the Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux alone should pay to be central.
About Évreux
Antiquity is nearer here than it looks.
What is Évreux known for?
This ground carries the name Mediolanum Aulercorum, two separate Samian Ware Discovery Sites and the nécropole du Clos au Duc, and the Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux is where all of that is read and displayed. After antiquity come the churches. The Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux, the Église Saint-Michel d'Évreux and the église Saint-Germain de Navarre stand in three separate quarters of one commune.
What are the main landmarks in Évreux?
Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux leads any list. The Église Saint-Michel d'Évreux and the église Saint-Germain de Navarre serve the other quarters, while the Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux gathers what the ground itself has given up. Sport takes the open space.
The complexe sportif Jean Bouin d'Évreux, the piscine plein soleil d'Évreux, the stade Jacques Olivier and the parc de l'hippodrome account for most of it, with the haras de Valême further out again.
What is the history of Évreux?
The name to start from is Mediolanum Aulercorum. That is what the settlement on this ground was called in antiquity, and the two Samian Ware Discovery Sites recorded within Évreux are the physical residue of the same period, with the nécropole du Clos au Duc holding the burials. Digging keeps turning things up.
The Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux exists to make sense of what comes out. Christian foundations organised the town that followed. The Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux carries the oldest dedication of the three, the Église Saint-Michel d'Évreux stands in its own quarter, and the église Saint-Germain de Navarre gives the Navarre side of the commune its centre.
Government concentrated here for the same reason. Évreux became the capital of the Eure, which fixed the courts, the offices and the schools of a whole department in one town in Normandy. Growth in the last century went outward rather than upward. Nétreville, the Val Iton and the boundary with Gravigny took the new housing, and the sports grounds went up with it: the stade de Nétreville, the stade du Val Iton, the stade Jacques Olivier, the stade des Marronniers d'Évreux, the stade Alphonse Pierre and the stade municipal de Gravigny.
Schools got their own pitches. The installation sportive du collège Henri Dunant, the installation sportive de l'école primaire Jean Moulin and the association Jeanne d'Arc belong to that build-out, as do the parc de l'hippodrome, the piscine plein soleil d'Évreux and the haras de Valême on the far edge.
Where is Évreux?
Twenty-six square kilometres, all of it inland. Évreux lies in the Eure, in Normandy, and its commune reaches from the streets around the Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux out through Navarre and Nétreville to the boundary it shares with Gravigny. The Val Iton names the low ground. Beyond the last houses the parc de l'hippodrome and the haras de Valême mark where the town gives way to open country.
What is the climate of Évreux?
Grey is the default setting. Normandy governs the year in Évreux, keeping winter mild, summer cool and the whole thing damp in a way that seldom commits to a full day of rain. Hard frost is unusual.
The low ground along the Val Iton holds mist on cold mornings longer than the rest of the commune does, and the parc de l'hippodrome stays green through a season that would burn it brown further south.
How do you get to Évreux?
Roads across the Eure converge on their departmental capital, which is the practical reason most arrivals in Évreux come by car or coach rather than any other way. The final approach is quick. Once parked, the Église Saint-Taurin d'Évreux, the Église Saint-Michel d'Évreux and the Musée d'Art, Histoire et Archéologie d'Évreux stand within minutes of one another, while Navarre, Nétreville and Gravigny are a drive rather than a walk.
Distances stay short either way.
