What is the history of Newport?

The Romans built a great fortress on the Usk. At Caerleon above the town they raised Isca, one of the three legionary bases of Roman Britain, with its amphitheatre and baths still standing among the fields. Legions held the river.

From Caerleon the Roman army watched over the Welsh frontier, and later legend made the place a court of King Arthur. Newport grew rich on coal and iron. In the nineteenth century the town became a great port shipping the coal of the valleys, its docks crowded with ships, and a transporter bridge was built to carry traffic over the river without blocking the masts.

The workers rose for the vote. In 1839 the Chartists marched on Newport to demand the vote for working men, and a bloody clash at the Westgate ended the last armed rising in Britain. The bridge still swings its cradle across.
