Rooms here answer to the Black Sea, and the resort strip that carries them runs south from the Chorokhi through Gonio and on into neighbouring Kvariati. Batumi lies north across the Chorokhi. Little of Batumi's hotel stock reaches this far south. Choose Gonio if you want the water at the door and the Gonio-Kvariati end of the city rather than its centre.

What are the main landmarks in Gonio?
A radar station stands inland of the shore. Most of what marks Gonio is water rather than building work: the Black Sea along its seaward flank, and the Chorokhi closing the settlement off to the north before the river empties into the same sea. Kvariati carries the coast on southward.
The shore itself is the reason the settlement is counted among the Black Sea resorts in Georgia, and it is the shore, not any built monument, that gives Gonio its shape.
What is the history of Gonio?
Batumi's edge runs a long way south. Gonio sat on the left bank of the Chorokhi as a settlement of its own long before the city's district lines were drawn around it and Kvariati together. The joined name Gonio-Kvariati is what stuck.
In Georgian it is გონიო. The sea, not the Chorokhi, gave the settlement its later purpose, and Gonio is counted among the Black Sea resorts in Georgia.
