The Chorokhi bank carries no listed monument along Khelvachauri. Anyone hunting a monument here should count the eight kilometres into the regional capital as part of the day. That leaves the river as the one fixed mark on this ground, running the length of the neighbourhood and holding the village clear of the streets where Batumi shows itself off.
What is the history of Khelvachauri?
Khelvachauri held the rank of daba from 1968 to 2011. Municipal borders were redrawn at the end of that run, and by far the greater part of the town passed into the city municipality of Batumi, which left what remained to be counted as a village again. The demotion was administrative.
The name comes from the Khelvachadze family, and the part Batumi absorbed still governs Khelvachauri Municipality from outside its borders. In the 2008 Russo-Georgian War the Russian air force bombed several targets near Khelvachauri, among them a military base the Russian army had handed over a year earlier.
