What Kvariati has instead of monuments is a shoreline: pebble beach in front, the wooded foothills of the Caucasus behind, and a Laz village threaded onto the narrow shelf between them. The built landmarks belong to Gonio and Batumi. Gonio sits immediately north on the left bank of the Chorokhi, Sarpi holds the border crossing to Turkey a little way south, and the city's own seafront is about a quarter of an hour up the road.
What is the history of Kvariati?
Kvariati was a Laz village long before it was a resort. This subgroup of Georgians holds the last stretch of shore before Sarpi and the border with Turkey. Bathing custom arrived later, and through the Soviet Union years the Adjara coast filled each summer with holidaymakers who had travelled a very long way to reach warm water.
In 2011 the village stopped being its own unit and was written into the municipal area of Batumi, tied administratively to Gonio just up the shore. The pair shares one name, Gonio-Kvariati.
