About Eastern District

Where to stay in Eastern District
Where you base yourself shapes the visit — here's the character of each area.
Hotels in Eastern District gather around Java Road and Quarry Bay, in a lived-in stretch of the island that trades a visitor strip for ordinary street frontage. Sai Wan Ho and Chai Wan lie further out again, nearer the sports centres and the shoreline than any late-night street. Guests who want the Causeway Bay shops or the Wan Chai bars face a trip west along the shore, and the same holds for Central, which sits at the far end of that run.
Little of that reaches Java Road.
About Eastern District
What are the main landmarks in Eastern District?
Sport is the public face of the district. Six public sports centres carry its neighbourhood names: Java Road Sports Centre and Island East Sports Centre toward the west, Quarry Bay Sports Centre in the middle, and Sai Wan Ho Sports Centre, Chai Wan Sports Centre and Lei Yue Mun Sports Centre spread through the eastern end. They are civic halls, not sights.
What the district does not hold is the visitor weight of Central, the shopping of Causeway Bay or the night trade of Wan Chai, and that absence shapes how it reads to anyone arriving from the west.
What is the history of Eastern District?
The name is administrative, and it came later than the places it covers. Hong Kong is divided into 18 districts, and this one draws together the eastern quarters of Hong Kong Island: the Java Road frontage, Quarry Bay, Sai Wan Ho and Chai Wan. Each quarter kept its own name.
Public building followed the same logic: the sports centres put up across the district carry the quarter names, from Java Road Sports Centre in the west to Chai Wan Sports Centre in the east, so the map still reads as a run of neighbourhoods rather than one town.
Where is Eastern District?
Eastern District takes the far end of Hong Kong Island, running east from Causeway Bay and Wan Chai toward Chai Wan, with the harbour along its whole northern edge. Central lies further west again. Its ground covers some 19 square kilometres.
