The choice narrows fast: Sheung Shui or Fanling, the two towns joined into the Fanling-Sheung Shui new town, since hardly anyone lives across the rest of North District. Both sit inside the built-up strip alongside the district's public sports centres, Lung Sum Avenue Sports Centre and Wo Hing Sports Centre, so a room in either half keeps shops and indoor sport within walking distance. The countryside starts quickly.
Anyone after a quiet northern base in the New Territories, rather than the crush of Hong Kong's inner districts, will find the new town the only practical address here.

Two public sports centres anchor the district's indoor recreation: Lung Sum Avenue Sports Centre and Wo Hing Sports Centre. Both serve Fanling-Sheung Shui, the new town that holds most of the district's housing, and both stand among that housing rather than out in the open ground. Neither draws sightseers.
Everything else worth a walk lies outside the towns, in the quieter New Territories ground that fills most of North District.
What is the history of North District?
The district line was drawn in 1982, when Hong Kong sorted the top of the New Territories into one of 18 districts. The line is administrative, not organic. It ties Fanling and Sheung Shui, the paired towns that give the Fanling-Sheung Shui new town its name, to a rural hinterland many times larger than the towns themselves.
