Where to stay in Timika
Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Three Kings Cathedral and Mozes Kilangin Airport pull the choice in two directions. Rooms cluster in the streets around the cathedral, which is the part of town where the shops and the eating places are, so a bed there means an evening spent on foot instead of in a car. That suits a first visit.
The airport side is a different proposition, out on the north-east edge of the built ground, close enough to the terminal that an early departure costs nothing in nerves and far enough that walking into town is not a thing anyone does. Past the edge the field thins fast. Mapurujaya lies east along the plain and keeps what a small settlement keeps, while Amamapare, the port on the coast to the south-east, is a working shore rather than a place with rooms.
Tembagapura is stranger still. It sits high in the Pegunungan Sudirman as a settlement built for Grasberg mine, so a bed up there is a matter of the concession's own arrangements and not of booking. So the plain decides it.
If you want Three Kings Cathedral and the shops within reach on foot, take the streets around it; if the flight is the fixed point of the trip, sleep on the north-east side near Mozes Kilangin Airport.

What is Timika known for?
Timika sits at the lowland end of the haul from the Grasberg mine, worked by PT Freeport Indonesia high in the Pegunungan Sudirman, and mining, industry and the services around them shape almost every working week here. Mining pulls people in as well as ore. Engineers and contractors from the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and Germany are based here, and that mix marks the town out from anywhere else in the province.
What are the main landmarks in Timika?
Three Kings Cathedral is the one named monument the town keeps. Its bulk stands over streets that are otherwise low and functional, put up for work rather than for looking at, and it doubles as the reference everyone gives when describing where something is. Beyond it, the list climbs.
Grasberg mine cuts into the high ground north-east of the plain, below Puncak Jaya in the Pegunungan Sudirman, and it is what put Timika on most maps in the first place.
What is the history of Timika?
No founding year is set down for Timika. What the record gives instead is a charter: the town holds the standing of a kota, a chartered city, and serves as the seat of Mimika Regency, which is a formal status rather than a date to hang a story on. The older layer is villages.
Names like Mapurujaya, Wania and Kaokap sit on the same lowland within a short drive, and they are the sort of settlement that covered this plain before any road ran up into the mountains. Then the mountain was opened. PT Freeport Indonesia works the Grasberg mine on the high ground to the north-east, and the whole shape of Timika, its airfield and its road and its wage economy, follows from ore that has to come down off that ridge and out to the sea.
Amamapare took the seaward end of that traffic, a port on the coast south-east of the town. Tembagapura took the upper end. It sits far above the plain in the Pegunungan Sudirman, a settlement placed for the mine rather than for the land around it, and between the two of them Timika became the place where the workforce, the flights and the supply for both actually live.
Where is Timika?
The ground here is flat and barely above the sea. Timika sits on the lowland plain that runs from the foot of the Pegunungan Sudirman south to the shore, crossed by short rivers such as Sungai Iwaka, Sungai Kamora and Sungai Otomona that carry mountain silt down to the coast. All the relief is northward.
Within a day's road the land goes from that plain to Puncak Jaya, and Grasberg mine sits high on the ridge in between.
What is the climate of Timika?
The Pegunungan Sudirman runs the weather. Air coming off the sea to the south rides up that wall almost every afternoon and drops its water on the plain, so Timika counts its year in wet and wetter rather than in warm and cold. Heat stays level month to month.
Cloud builds early over the ridge and comes down the slope by mid-afternoon, which is why the useful part of a day here is its first half.
How do you get to Timika?
Flights carry nearly all of it. Mozes Kilangin Airport lies north-east of the town, and it is the arrival point that matters for the whole of Mimika Regency. Ore leaves the other way.
It runs down to Amamapare, the port on the shore south-east of Timika, while the road up into the Pegunungan Sudirman climbs through Tembagapura toward Grasberg mine. Within the plain the roads reach Mapurujaya to the east and the small settlements between Timika and the coast.
