Walking covers Blitar without much effort. Rooms near the Library and Museum of Bung Karno put the city's main draw and the Istana Gebang Museum within a few minutes on foot, which suits anyone here for a single unhurried day. Choice is thin either way.
The whole of Kota Blitar covers about thirty-two square kilometres, and the stock of beds matches that scale rather than the visitor numbers Penataran pulls in. Beyond the boundary the city stops abruptly, because Blitar Regency wraps it on every side and the fields, villages and the ground at Penataran begin at once. There is no suburb to spread into.
Staying out there means a vehicle. Malang, some seventy-three kilometres off, and Surabaya, at about a hundred and sixty-seven, both hold far deeper choice, and either works as a base for a day trip in to Penataran and the museums. Blitar itself rewards the slower option. A night in town buys the Istana Gebang Museum and the Library and Museum of Bung Karno before the coaches arrive, and the streets while they are still cool.

What is the history of Blitar?
Penataran came long before the city. The archaeological ground there belongs to an older Java than anything inside the modern boundary, and the Penataran Museum was built to hold what the site left behind. Blitar itself is much younger, and much smaller.
The town was chartered in 1906, and its boundary, its offices and its compact thirty-two square kilometres all date from that period rather than from Penataran's. Bung Karno's name is the one attached to Blitar. The Library and Museum of Bung Karno and the Istana Gebang Museum both take their subject from that association, and between them they give the city a draw that its size would not otherwise support.
Growth had nowhere to go. Blitar Regency surrounds Kota Blitar on all sides, so the city has stayed an enclave of some thirty-two square kilometres while the fields, villages and the ground at Penataran beyond the line stayed with the regency. Distance kept it quiet.
Malang lies about seventy-three kilometres off and Surabaya about a hundred and sixty-seven, far enough that Blitar never became a suburb of either, and near enough that both send day traffic in.

Blitar has no outskirts. Blitar Regency closes around Kota Blitar on every side, leaving an enclave of about thirty-two square kilometres that sits some hundred and sixty-seven metres above sea level. The land beyond belongs to the regency, and Penataran lies out among it.
Malang is about seventy-three kilometres away, Surabaya a good deal further, and the whole of it sits in tropical Jawa Timur south of the equator.
What is the climate of Blitar?
Altitude takes only the edge off. Blitar stands some hundred and sixty-seven metres up, high enough to soften the nights but nowhere near enough to lift it out of the tropical belt that runs across this part of Java. Wet months come heavy.
The fields of Blitar Regency around the enclave stay green on that rain, and the ground at Penataran is at its best before the afternoon build-up.
How do you get to Blitar?
Most arrivals come through Malang. The road in from Malang runs about seventy-three kilometres, and from Surabaya it is roughly a hundred and sixty-seven, which makes Blitar a comfortable half-day out and back from either. Penataran needs its own leg.
Reaching it means a vehicle rather than the short walk that links the Istana Gebang Museum to the Library and Museum of Bung Karno inside the city.
