Banyuwangi splits into two very different stays, and the ferry decides which one makes sense. The port side suits anyone crossing to Bali, because the strait boats run from the town itself and a bed within reach of the terminal removes the pre-dawn drive that catches people out. Timing is everything here.
Two museums, Blambangan Museum and the Banyuwangi Mandar Village Museum, are the nearest thing to a sightseeing programme while the wait runs down. Inland is the other choice. The regency reaches west into mountains and forest, and lodging out there trades the ferry timetable for cooler nights and quick access to the country that earned the taman bumi designation in 2018.
Rooms are scattered and few. It suits you if a morning in the hills matters more than a short walk to the boat, and the drive back down is long enough to make an early crossing awkward from up there. The open coast holds the third option, plain and quiet, facing the sea that closes the eastern and southern sides of the regency rather than facing the Bali Strait, and taken mostly by people who came for water instead of for transit.
