Where to stay in Gresik

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Most visitors sleep in Surabaya. Gresik Regency runs right up against the city and takes in a large part of its northern and western suburbs, so a room on that side of Surabaya is already halfway to the town. That suits business trips.

The coastal districts, Kebomas District and Gresik District among them, hold the regency seat, and what beds exist there sit close to the offices rather than to anything scenic. Bawean Island is the exception. It lies about a hundred and twenty-five kilometres out, north of Java and Madura, and reaching it takes a boat and a plan, which is exactly why anyone who makes the crossing stays over rather than turning round.

Manyar District, Bungah District and Ujungpangkah District spread along the rest of the shore, quiet by comparison and short on rooms. Sightseeing pulls inland. The Sunan Giri Museum and the Giri Kedaton Site and Raden Supeno Tomb are the reason to stay in the town itself, and so are the four heritage houses listed under personal names: Rumah Efi Rosyidah, Rumah Lusi Hidayati, Rumah Mochammad Chisni and Rumah F. Rahmah.

Situs Gosari rounds out a second day.

About Gresik

The coast does the work.

What is Gresik known for?

Almost a third of Gresik Regency is coastal, strung through Kebomas District, Gresik District, Manyar District, Bungah District and Ujungpangkah District, and the regency also takes in a large part of Surabaya's northern and western suburbs. Heritage is the other draw. The Sunan Giri Museum, the Giri Kedaton Site and Raden Supeno Tomb and the archaeological ground at Situs Gosari give the regency a set of stops well back from the shoreline.

What are the main landmarks in Gresik?

Giri is the anchor. The Sunan Giri Museum keeps the collection, and the Giri Kedaton Site and Raden Supeno Tomb hold the ground itself, which is a different register from a museum case. Situs Gosari adds an archaeological site of its own.

Four houses complete the list. Rumah Efi Rosyidah, Rumah F. Rahmah, Rumah Lusi Hidayati and Rumah Mochammad Chisni are recorded under the names of the people they belonged to.

What is the history of Gresik?

The oldest layer is at Giri. Giri Kedaton Site and Raden Supeno Tomb mark a seat that predates anything on the modern coastline, and the Sunan Giri Museum was set up to keep what belongs to it. Situs Gosari belongs to the same deep record.

The archaeological ground there is the regency's other window onto a past the shoreline has largely built over. Names on the heritage list tell the later story. Rumah Efi Rosyidah, Rumah F. Rahmah, Rumah Lusi Hidayati and Rumah Mochammad Chisni are all recorded as houses under personal names, which is how a working town keeps its architecture rather than its monuments.

The coast did the rest. Almost a third of Gresik Regency is coastal ground, split between Kebomas District, Gresik District, Manyar District, Bungah District and Ujungpangkah District, and that strip is where the regency's growth concentrated. Surabaya then arrived from the other direction.

A large part of the city's northern and western suburbs falls inside Gresik Regency, so the boundary between a regency seat and a metropolitan edge has become hard to read on the ground. Bawean Island stayed apart. It sits about a hundred and twenty-five kilometres north of Java and Madura, administered from the mainland but out of reach of any of it.

Where is Gresik?

Coast defines Gresik Regency. Almost a third of its area is coastal, running through Kebomas District, Gresik District, Manyar District, Bungah District and Ujungpangkah District, and the town sits on that shoreline with Surabaya immediately beyond. Bawean Island lies far offshore.

The island is about a hundred and twenty-five kilometres north of Java and Madura, which puts a large stretch of open water inside the same tropical regency in Jawa Timur.

What is the climate of Gresik?

The sea keeps it level. Gresik sits low on a tropical coast, so the heat holds through the year and the water off Bawean Island moderates the swing between day and night far more than any hill would. Damp air never lifts off Gresik.

Wet months bring the heavier rain to the coastal districts, and the crossing to Bawean Island is the part of a Gresik Regency trip most likely to be undone by weather.

How do you get to Gresik?

Surabaya is the way in. Gresik Regency reaches into the city's northern and western suburbs, so the road out from Surabaya crosses the boundary long before it reaches the regency seat on the coast. Bawean Island is harder.

It lies about a hundred and twenty-five kilometres out, north of Java and Madura, which makes the sea leg a separate journey rather than an extension of the drive from Surabaya through Kebomas District.
