Payyanur keeps what rooms it has in the municipal town on the Perumba River, where the offices of a taluk headquarters, the market and the ward libraries all sit close together. Those blocks are the working base. Nothing about the place is built around visitors, so the lodging is plain and aimed at people arriving on business in the Kannur district, and the ward libraries are as close to a sight as the streets provide.
Kannur, the district town, holds the wider choice and lies within reach for anyone who wants one. Taliparamba is the other neighbour, and sixteen of the villages that make up Payyanur taluk were de-linked from Taliparamba taluk when the new unit was drawn, which gives a sense of how closely the three places sit together. Beds run out in the villages. The 22 villages of the taluk spread back from the Perumba River into Malabar farm country with next to no formal rooms among them, so a traveller working that ground sleeps in Payyanur or in Kannur and drives.

What is Payyanur known for?
Payyanur was the first municipality in Kerala to put a library in every one of its wards, a record that describes the town better than any monument would, and it stands on the Perumba River in the Kannur district. The taluk is young. Payyanur taluk was inaugurated in March 2018, assembled from 22 villages of the Malabar region.

No monument carries the town's name. What Payyanur has instead is a distinction of another kind: it was the first municipality in Kerala to establish libraries in all of its wards, and that network of reading rooms is the thing the record singles out. The Perumba River is the other feature.

What is the history of Payyanur?
The river is older than the paperwork. Payyanur grew on the banks of the Perumba River in the Malabar region, and its civic record is the record of a municipality with its offices and its ward libraries rather than of any surviving monument. Its founding date never made it into the record.
What the sources do fix is a first: Payyanur became the first municipality in Kerala to establish libraries in all its wards, a decision that put reading rooms in every corner of the town. Administration caught up in 2018. On 10 March that year the chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, inaugurated Payyanur as the fifth taluk of the Kannur district, an act that redrew the map around the town rather than inside it.
The villages came from two neighbours. Sixteen were de-linked from Taliparamba taluk and six from Kannur taluk, making 22 in all, so the new unit was assembled out of ground that had been governed from elsewhere. Those 22 villages of the Malabar region make up Payyanur taluk, and the town on the Perumba River administers them from the streets that hold its libraries.
Payyanur has been its headquarters since.

The Perumba River measures the year at Payyanur. It fills through the wet months and drops back through the dry ones, and the tropical pattern of the Malabar region holds the temperature high and even from one end of the year to the other, so the seasons here are read off the water rather than off a thermometer. Humidity stays up.
Travel through the taluk is easiest in the drier stretch.
How do you get to Payyanur?
Kannur is the district town and the usual reference for arrivals. Payyanur lies out along the Malabar region from it, on the Perumba River, and the same corridor that links the towns of the Kannur district carries the traffic in. Taliparamba is the other neighbour.
